Day 1: The Light Shines on Magdalene
“And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.” (Genesis 1:3-4)
“and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out” (Luke 8:2)
Genesis 1 opens with God stepping into chaos; not to eliminate it all at once, but to shape it. For three days, He creates spaces: light and darkness, sky and sea, land and vegetation. Then, for the next three, He fills those spaces with life. Creation begins with light breaking into the void.
Mary Magdalene’s story begins the same way: in the dark. She’s introduced almost as a footnote that she had been plagued by seven demons. But that small detail carries the weight of her entire origin. Her life was chaos; overrun with unrelenting darkness. But then Jesus steps in and brings light into her world. He creates space; room for something new to exist. With a word, He drives out what held her captive. The storm inside her begins to settle and starts to take shape. Just like in the beginning, Jesus doesn’t just remove darkness. He orders it making room for life to begin.
