Artists have always made unlikely activists, seeing what others overlook and naming what others can’t quite articulate. This year, we’re celebrating Asian American artists whose voices, bodies, and imaginations reshaped the world into something more accepting and more free.
Favianna Rodriguez Giannoni is an interdisciplinary artist, cultural strategist, and entrepreneur based in Oakland, California. Her art and praxis address migration, gender justice, climate change, racial equity, and sexual freedom. Her work centers joy and healing, while challenging entrenched myths and dominant cultural practices. To learn more about her amazing work, click here.
Christina Fernandez is a Los Angeles–based artist, has spent over three decades conducting rich explorations of migration, labor, gender, her Mexican American identity, and the capacities of photography itself. Martine Gutierrez is an American visual and performance artist. Her work focuses on identity, and how perception of self is formed, expressed, and perceived. She has created music videos, billboard campaigns, episodic films, photographs, live performance artworks, and a satirical fashion magazine investigating identity as both a social construct and an authentic expression of self.
